BACKGROUNDPeace Parks is a non-profit conservation organization that specializes in conservation at scale through the development of Transfrontier Conservation Areas and the long-term management of key protected areas in partnership with government conservation agencies and communities within these landscapes. We currently focus on the development of five priority transboundary landscapes measuring over 65 million hectares throughout southern Africa and the co-management of ten national parks and protected areas covering over 5.2 million hectares.JOB PURPOSETo lead the integration and support implementation of Environment and Social Safeguards (ESS) across all landscapes within which Peace Parks operates by providing e strategic direction and technical support on the Environmental and Social Safeguarding for projects under the PPF portfolio. The incumbent shall ensure that Environmental and Social Safeguarding standards are met and provide support on Environmental and Social Safeguarding (ESS) aspects of new project design and proposal development.KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS AND RESPONSIBILITIESMainstreaming Environmental & Social aspects into PPF projectsProvide conceptual and technical expertise on mainstreaming key environmental and social considerations in all stages of the project/programme management cycle, in accordance with agreed safeguard instruments.Monitor safeguards compliance in close coordination with the M&E unit in a timely manner.Undertake regular project site visits to assess and enforce compliance with policies and best practices.Facilitate the implementation of policies, procedures and measures intended to prevent, reduce and mitigate for the unintended negative impacts of project interventions Coordinate and supervise all the Environmental and Social Safeguarding (ESS) related issues under the PPF portfolio.Compliance Monitoring and ReportingReview Environmental and Social Monitoring Framework (ESMF) for activities under the various projects and prepare action plan for implementation.Travel to project sites to monitor safeguard implementation and compliance.Monitor safeguards compliance in close coordination with the MEL team.Ensure standardisation of all ESS reporting.Prepare and submit regular monitoring reports on the environmental, social, health, and safety (ESHS) performance of projects including but not limited to the implementation and status of preparation and implementation of Environmental & Social (E&S) instruments required by the organisation.Serve as the focal point person on environmental and social issues for 3rd stakeholder groups (donors) and work closely with implementing partners to provide advice on sustainable means of resolving any challenges.Working RelationshipInternal: Work closely with all Projects and Operations staff members, consultants, and researchers.External: Interacts frequently with PPF Network, other organisations, Government Departments (DNPW, ANAC, Human Rights Commission) etc.QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCEDegree in environmental studies, sociology, anthropology, applied social sciences or relevant field is required.At least four (4) years of relevant experience in the implementation of largescale projects in regard to environmental and social safeguards related work financed by Multilateral/Development Financial Institutions such as the World Bank, ADB, AFD, KfW or equivalent.SKILLS AND ABILITIESExcellent English language skills.Good knowledge and skill in Microsoft office packages.Excellent cross-cultural and people skills and ability to interact with locals, Indigenous People, government officials, Community Based Organisations and NGO staff.Adaptive Management Skills.Strong communication, coordination, and facilitation skills.Strong negotiating and analytical skills.Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team.Interested candidates are invited to submit a cover letter detailing their interest in and suitability for the position and a Curriculum Vitae, with full address, telephone number, email address and contact details of at least three contactable references.
