We’re growing our team and looking for a curious data scientist, looking to grow and develop with the right support and enjoys solving commercial business problems by utilising data, modern tech stacks and communicating with stakeholders in our marketing and sales functions. We're at the beginning of our data journey so this is an exciting opportunity to help us shape and mould great data practices with some super smart colleagues in a dynamic, fun business. It's a new role, created to support our key drivers by increasing the level of data science applied to our business practices and customer experiences and an ideal opportunity for someone looking for real ownership and a role to make their own. What you'll be doing: Work closely with our Marketing, Sales and Product teams, taking a hands on approach in helping build solutions and insights that align with marketing and business objectives to drive market share, improve efficiencies and increase revenue Where appropriate you’ll build prototype models to support the creation of sophisticated algorithms or models such as optimisation systems, regression modelling, data pipelines, NLP, experimental analysis, and reporting Examine internal and external data to help improve revenue generation, reduce costs, and enhance operational performance through data analysis Create, track and prepare a wide range of reports that are accurate, clear and commercially focused Apply expert analysis and commentary to marketing insights and use this analysis to create compelling evidence-based and actionable data stories to share with stakeholders to drive decision Work with the BI Analysts and Data Engineers to support continuous improvement of data quality Source, collect and extract data that is accurate and fit for purpose, working with developers to configure, test and update configurations You'll also have the chance to work with a number of languages and software - including Python, SQL, R, AWS, Snowflake&DBT all within a modern cloud-based data science environment Skills and experience you will need to be successful in the role: Bachelor's or advanced degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Information Systems, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering) Minimum of 5 years of commercial experience in a data science role Excellent at exploratory data analysis. We expect our data scientists to form an in-depth understanding of data being worked on, before moving on to designing and training fit-for-purpose models in many different application area s Excellent communication skills, in order to explain your findings and sharing of new knowledge gained in the process of completing a project Good level of competency with descriptive and inferential statistics and have a solid working knowledge of probability theory and probability distributions Understand and can apply Data Science principles (such as the scientific method, hypothesis testing and experimental design) Have a reasonable understanding of more advanced techniques (e.g. regression, optimisation), and experience utilising these in a commercial capacity Proficient at SQL and have a good understanding of Relational Database principles and data structures Have a working knowledge of Python, R or another programming language commonly used in data science (e.g. Scala) Have a solid understanding of options for presenting data (graphically and otherwise) and are able to effectively tell stories&derive insights with analysis and reporting Have experience and a good working knowledge of digital marketing with experience focussing on projects in the field Ideally, you would have worked with performance marketing channels (Paid Search, Paid Social, Programmatic etc.) and be well-*** in the fundamental concepts of marketing An understanding of key performance indicators (KPIs) and the ability to interpret marketing data Passionate about creating simple, elegant and scalable data-centric solutions Company Benefits Highly competitive base salary Medical Aid contribution ZAR1000 per month 20 days holiday a year plus public holidays Transport home In-house barista Friday drinks and regular social activities The chance to work for a fast-growing disruptive technology business DE&I In our pursuit of fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace, we invite individuals from all backgrounds to join us in our mission. Working Patterns We are extremely proud of our culture and believe in the many benefits that being in the office provides - all our roles require regular time in our office in the central business district in Cape Town. We do not offer fully remote roles but we support hybrid working wherever possible (3 days in office, 2 days from home).
