A position for a Manager: Corporate Legal Services exists in the Corporate Legal Services team, based at Santam Sandton or Tyger Valley, Cape Town. The purpose of the role is to render legal support and solution services to the Santam Limited Group, taking into account commercial demands and business imperatives. What will make you successful in this role? Manage all legal aspects and key contracts in the direct, intermediated and outsourced business environments i.e. binder holder, outsourced services and intermediary services agreements in our Conventional, Specialist and affiliate businesses. Lead the business in achieving legally and commercially sound outcomes through the provision of considered and legally astute advice. Support business interactions with external services providers and stakeholders, including but not limited to claims disputes, service disputes and managing non-claims litigation. Assess the impact of legislative and/or regulatory developments on business and design solutions to address the impact, including but not limited to short-term insurance underwriting, products, distribution models and client service partners such as panel beaters, adjusters etc. Provide support to Claims on legal matters including internal arbitration, Ombud review satisfaction, claims management philosophy and claims settlement processes. Manage and work in close proximity with the business and the various underwriting teams in the drafting and reviewing of general commercial contracts and policy documentation. Manage the negotiation and implementation of all legal aspects of strategic commercial projects and transactions. Generally identify, manage and mitigate legal risks for the Santam Group. Qualification and Experience The minimum formal qualification for this job is a LLB university degree and admittance as a practicing attorney or advocate in the High Court of South Africa. At least eight to ten years working experience in the short-term insurance environment. Highly developed negotiating skills and a very thorough working knowledge of insurance law. Highly developed research and reasoning skills and the ability to communicate complex legal concepts in a user-friendly format. High level of professionalism with the ability to provide legal solutions which are comprehensive, accurate and practical within very tight timeframes. Commercial; competition and reinsurance law experience and expertise are an added advantage.
