The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) spearheads South Africa’s activities in the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope, commonly known as the SKA, in engineering, science and construction. SARAO is a National Facility managed by the National Research Foundation and incorporates radio astronomy instruments and programmes such as the MeerKAT telescope in the Karoo, the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) in Gauteng, the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (AVN) programme in nine African countries as well as the associated human capital development and commercialisation endeavours. This position is responsible for the development, implementation and management of the SARAO and its stakeholders’ Environmental policies and procedures that will ensure compliance with relevant legislative and regulatory requirements and ISO accreditation in the Karoo. Key Responsibilities: * Monitoring the Integrated Environmental Management Plans * Conducting regular site inspections to identify and address environmental concerns * Development and implementation of EMS Procedures and Policies * Conducting and providing environmental awareness * Conducting environmental investigations; and * Facilitating and coordinating of permits, record of decisions and authorisations. Key Requirements: Qualification: * National Diploma in Environmental Sciences/Management * Registration or eligibility to register with SACNASP and/ or EAPASA (advantageous) * Three (3) years proven working experience as an environmental officer working in construction and operational environment. * Proven and relevant exposure to environmental management and legal compliance * Proven experience in environmental sustainability * Computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.) * Driver’s license Experience: * Relevant environmental policies, legislation, guidelines and standard is a pre-request * Proven experience in implementation and maintaining of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System * Project management Knowledge: * Relevant environmental policies, legislation, guidelines and standard is a pre-request * Tools/software relevant to Environment * Sound technical knowledge of risk assessment and evaluation, environmental management tools, programmes and systems * Regulations and environmental statutory requirements Additional Notes: Ability/personal attributes * Report writing * Presentation skills. * Develop and implement procedures. * Sustainable practices and resources management. * Environmental law and regulation. * Data analysis and interpretation. * Well-developed written and verbal communication. * Environmental education and outreach. * Understanding of sustainable development principles.
