The International Trade Lawyer plays a pivotal role within the association, specialising in regional trade dynamics and the facilitation of cross-border commerce among member countries within the regional bloc. The primary purpose of this position is to navigate the intricate legal landscape inherent in regional trade agreements and foster seamless integration among member states and related regional partners, such as the WCO ESA ROCB and RPSG, the SADC Business Council, and related Customs Authorities on the African continent. Excellent knowledge of trade agreements is a further requirement, especially the AfCFTA. All of the above requires a fully functional home office with an excellent internet connection. They would also need to be available during office hours and flexible. The candidate must have their own vehicle Key Capabilities/Competencies: Strong leadership and management skills to effectively oversee and guide membership and project-related activities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate membership benefits, project objectives, and updates to various stakeholders. Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with potential members, project team members, and other stakeholders. The ability to manage, expand, and develop relationships with regional counterparts and associations is key. Proficient in project management methodologies and tools to plan, execute, and monitor projects effectively. Strong organisational and time management skills to prioritise tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines. Analytical and problem-solving skills to identify issues, risks, and opportunities and develop appropriate solutions. Attention to detail to ensure accurate member records and project documentation. Customer-centric mindset to deliver excellent service and support to members. Ability to collaborate and work effectively in cross-functional teams. Flexibility and adaptability to handle changing priorities and project requirements. Key Tasks&Responsibilities Management of the company's regional partners, programs, and affiliates, Notably the WCO ESA ROCB and RPSG, the SADC Business Council, and related Customs Authorities on the African continent. Legal Compliance and Advisory: Ensuring that member companies adhere to the legal frameworks established by regional trade agreements. This involves offering expert guidance on compliance matters, including customs regulations, tariffs, and non-tariff barriers within the regional bloc. Policy Advocacy: Act as a liaison between the freight forwarding association and governmental bodies, advocating for policies that promote trade facilitation, reduce bureaucratic hurdles, and enhance the competitiveness of member countries in the regional market. Dispute Resolution: Mediate and assist trade disputes and conflicts arising from divergent interpretations of regional trade agreements. Facilitate negotiations and seek amicable resolutions to ensure the continued flow of goods and services among member states. Capacity Building: Develop training programs and workshops aimed at equipping member companies with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate regional trade complexities effectively. Provide legal training on the nuances of regional trade agreements and assist in the development of compliance strategies. Market Intelligence: Stay abreast of legal developments, trade policies, and market trends impacting regional trade dynamics. Provide timely insights and analysis to member companies to help them capitalise on emerging opportunities and mitigate potential risks. Planning, coordination, and management of ad-hoc projects: Ensuring their successful execution – especially on the Authorised Economic Operator Programme (AEO) and Logistics Monitoring System (LMS) Facilitate effective communication and collaboration among partners, project team members, and other related stakeholders. Experience: A minimum of 3 years experience in a relevant position and five years in the industry would be beneficial. Extensive experience practising law in the field of international trade, preferably within the context of regional integration and trade agreements. However, in the case of the candidate currently studying towards the completion of post-graduate studies, an exception can be made, and time can be availed to complete their degree Additional knowledge/skills: Strong presentation skills to effectively communicate membership benefits, project updates, and outcomes. Proficient in using relevant software applications and tools for project and membership management. Be able to work both in a team and independently Very organised, admin-orientated individual with excellent computer skills. Outlook, Excel, One Drive, website, and MS Teams/Zoom Must be a driven, self-motivated individual. Candidates should have a keen eye for detail and high self-discipline.
