This Johannesburg- or Cape Town-based role enables the Group Actuarial strategy by: Being the Finance Actuary for the “Shareholder” (OGA - Other Group Activities) segment, which is accountable for life insurance and required capital calculations of group shareholder exposures&business falling outside Old Mutual’s other business segments: Managing relationships between your team and various other teams (actuarial, finance and risk, across legal entities) in order to deliver on set objectives. Planning and delivering actuarial output for the allocated segment. Understanding and interpreting the complex and diverse requirements affecting this segment and entities in it, to ensure delivery of appropriate information from this segment into Group reporting and management structures. Driving commercial management of insurance risks across the group: Driving delivery of content into and through the Life Liability Committee (a committee formed to support the FD in the measurement, monitoring and management of life insurance liability- and capital-related risks across the Group). Embedding operation of the Short-Term Liability Committee (a committee analogous to the LLC but focusing on property and casualty business across the Group) Managing relationships with suppliers of information needed to monitor / manage such risks. Proposing and/or delivering on agreed actions focused on improving the commercial outcomes from better management of such risks. Leading the team delivering both of the above: Take accountability for delivering all their output (including their projects). Managing team processes, continuously improving and ensuring appropriate key controls. Driving high levels of engagement and development of team members, Making a valuable contribution as part of the Group Actuarial management team and other management structures. Duties and responsibilities include: Relationship Management Responsible for managing the relationships between the team and key clients in the entities covered by the team (entity CFOs, Chief Actuary, etc.) and group functions (Planning and business insights, Balance sheet management, etc.). Responsible for managing the relationships between the team and other segment and group actuarial and finance teams, as needed to facilitate delivery. Planning and Co-ordinating Jointly responsible for the co-ordination of deliveries across the actuarial function, in the areas of financial, regulatory and management reporting, and delivery on related projects. Valuation and Financial Reporting (including Capital Requirements) Responsible for accuracy and quality of the consolidated financial reporting results, including IFRS / EV / regulatory / internal risk metrics / etc. Accountable for compliance with agreed policy / methodology / principles, professional guidance and legislation. Ensure unique complexities within the segment have been considered. Proactively provides analysis and recommends appropriate action to stakeholders. Responsible for accuracy and quality of actuarial portions of regulatory reporting. Business Planning, Forecasts and Monthly reporting Provide actuarial input for the purposes of consolidated business plans and forecasts. Produce monthly reporting of actuarial metrics for the segment as required, including analysis of results and management recommendations as appropriate. Process Ownership and Key Controls Responsible for continuous improvement of team processes and quality of information produced. Responsible for signing off on periodic, internal confirmations on the effectiveness of key controls. Insurance Risk Management Drive the efficiency of processes feeding into or from the Life Liability Committee and the Short-Term Liability Committee. Drive improvements to the understanding and commercial management of life insurance and short-term insurance liability- or capital-related risks across the group through the relevant committees and their initiatives. Management and Leadership Manages a direct team of initially 3 actuarial staff, to ensure effective delivery and performance. Play a key part in influencing the group’s actuarial reporting strategy. Make a significant leadership contribution to managing actuarial finance across the group. Role Requirements: Skills, Qualifications and Experience Qualified Actuary, with a minimum of 8 years actuarial experience, with at least 4 years post-qualification. Previous technical (IFRS, MCEV and Solvency II/FSIs/GOIs) and/or cross-functional co-ordination and/or Client Relationship Management experience would be a strong advantage.
