Deputy Director, Project Management – Biodiversity Biobanks South Africa Reference Number: FBS/013/2024 All-inclusive remuneration package of R1 003 890.00 per annum The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a highly motivated individual to provide project management for the Biodiversity Biobanks South Africa (BBSA) which is a network of institutions including science councils and universities that hold biodiversity biobanks (e.g. gene banks, seed banks, DNA banks, microbial cultures, wildlife disease biobanks) and is one of the Department of Science&Innovation’s research infrastructure projects hosted by SANBI. This position requires a degree or equivalent qualification in Life Sciences (including plant / animal sciences, microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology) at NQF level 7. A relevant postgraduate qualification at NQF level 8 and the completion of a course in project management will be an added advantage. This position also requires a minimum of 8 years of work experience in a relevant field, 4 years of which should be in a research-related project management and supervisory role. The following competencies are critical for the candidate to be successful in this position: knowledge of biobank management; experience in the management of multi-institutional projects; experience in engaging with various stakeholders; strong leadership capabilities and project management skills; proven ability to think strategically and to solve complex problems; ability to analyse information logically; ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member; flexibility, adaptability and reliability; excellent interpersonal skills; excellent communication skills (both verbal and written); computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (MS Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook), as well as the ability to adopt new software and technologies required for project management. The possession of a valid driver’s license and willingness to travel is essential. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE: Project planning / management for achieving Strategic Objectives of the BBSA; Contract development and management: prepare and finalise all project initiation and contracting documentation (negotiations, motivations, TORs, MoUs, fund agreements); Monitoring and reporting on progress of project implementation; Annual budget preparation, tracking of expenditure across network and ensuring that this complies with Treasury requirements; Manage the communication and task management platforms; and Organise, Advisory and Coordinating Committee meetings, and various other network engagement sessions including compilation of documentation.
