Reporting to the R&D Mechanical Manager, the successful applicant will be responsible for the design of products, jigs and components. The successful applicant will be involved in the complex phases of an engineering project requiring the application of engineering principles and techniques. The main duties of this position include: Assisting in the development of product specifications with the support of the manager. Translating technical specifications received from the manager into usable engineering data applicable to the particular assignment. This requires a good understanding of procedures and concepts within own discipline and a reasonable knowledge of these elements in other disciplines. Working closely within a mixed-discipline team to achieve the objectives and has a reasonable understanding of other related disciplines. Documenting all work, including advanced algorithms and design calculations, plans and estimates as well as the design performance characteristics and a summarized project cost breakdown in a professional manner. Possess a good understanding of the impact of regulatory requirements on designs and works with senior personnel to ensure designs will pass relevant standards. Developing test procedures, the relevant control apparatus and equipment for testing products either on your own or under the guidance of senior personnel. Testing, evaluating, modifying/enhancing and re-testing products, mechanical components and devices. Working in a professional manner consistent with the company’s commitment to excellence, and R&D’s applicable development methodologies and/or standard operating procedures. Producing detailed engineering drawings in SolidWorks that fully define components to be manufactured, including part tolerances and the assembly process. Standardizing all designs as far as possible, using standard components; particular consideration must be given to inventory management, manufacturability, and maintenance. A thorough understanding of appropriate materials for design, surface finishes, fits and tolerances is also required. Solving relatively complex problems in core discipline, and basic problems in other engineering disciplines. May rely on assistance from senior personnel to solve complex problems. Acting as an advisor and coach to mentor junior members of the team. Designing products/components/devices that can be made reliably, cost effectively and that will perform consistently in specified operating environments within agreed timelines/budgets. Being responsible for projects/parts of projects requiring good analytical skills as well as evaluative judgement based on the analysis of factual and qualitative information in complicated or novel situations. Staying abreast of latest developments in the discipline. n depth knowledge of fabrication processes for low, medium and high-volume products. Qualifications and other Requirements: Degree or NQF Level 8 Diploma with minimum of 6 years' work experience in a similar environment Proven experience in a Mechanical Engineering role with a track record of successful projects. Experience with the use of design tools (preferably SolidWorks) Basic knowledge and experience in the use of pneumatics and hydraulics (preferable) Able to use hand tools and conventional machinery to develop prototypes/jigs/test equipment (preferable) Leadership qualities, including the ability to inspire and motivate team members, foster a positive work culture, and drive continuous improvement. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on finding practical solutions to complex technical challenges. Ability to adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic work environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
