CORE PURPOSE OF JOBTo manage all of the civil engineering laboratories and to present and supervise practical sessions with students.KEY PERFORMANCE AREASTake responsibility for equipment by managing the calibration, installation, servicing, upgrading and maintenance of this equipment.Compile an annual budget for new laboratory equipment and material and obtain the relevant quotes from suppliers.Manage and maintain the civil engineering surveying, materials, structures, and bitumen/asphalt laboratories.Ensure that sufficient materials and consumables are available for tests.Liaise with relevant industry bodies and organizations in order to stay abreast with the latest developments in industry standards and technology.Manage and support the administrative and technical requirements of the Lecturing staff within the laboratories.Interact with students by assisting them with their practical assignments, research, and related problems.Provide technical support with special functions such as marketing opportunities.Take responsibility for safety measures in laboratories and ensure compliance with the OSH Act.CORE COMPETENCIESCandidates must have gained at least one year of full-time experience in a civil/bitumen engineering laboratory. Have in-depth knowledge of civil engineering laboratory practices and functions. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Advanced skills in MS Excel would be an added advantage.REQUIREMENTSIn order to be considered for appointment to the post of Senior Lab Technician: Civil Engineering, candidates must:be in possession of a M+4/BTech or BEng Tech Honours degree in Civil Engineering and be professionally registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa;minimum 3 – 5 years experience;proven track record in the related field;In order to be considered for appointment to the post of Lab Technician: Civil Engineering, candidates must:be in possession of a M+3/Diploma/BEng Tech in Civil Engineering and be eligible within a period of two years to register with the Engineering Council of South Africa;minimum 3 – 5 years experience;proven track record in the related field.The grade at which successful candidates are appointed will depend on their qualification and professional experience and status.Nelson Mandela University reserves the right not to make an appointment.
