CORE PURPOSE OF JOB: Reporting to the CEO, the Director will provide overall direction and management of the internal operations of SAIMI, enabling the smooth operation of the Institute and ensuring delivery in key result areas to facilitate SAIMI’s strategic positioning and public profile in the maritime sector. This will include management of the Institute’s financial, human resources, research support, governance, and administrative requirements. Furthermore, the incumbent will provide the operational interface for SAIMI with the Nelson Mandela University and other strategic partners, whilst providing high-level strategic support to the CEO towards achieving SAIMI’s key objectives. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS: Provide strategic support to the CEO Support the CEO in establishing and developing strategic direction for SAIMI underpinned by achievable operational plans. Keep abreast of developments in the maritime sector and alert CEO to issues; provide advisory support, access to networks etc. Ensure implementation of Advisory Board decisions and actions. Define, implement, and revise operational policies and guidelines for the Institute. Develop operational / annual performance plans aligned to SAIMI strategic goals. Represent SAIMI and present in meetings, at events and conferences, and/or on boards, committees etc. Overall management of SAIMI operations Operational planning and management of the resources (human, financial, physical, IT, etc) needed for SAIMI to operate effectively and deliver to its strategic goals. Manage performance of staff responsible for office management and administration of human resources, finance, contracts, and Advisory Board secretariat. Ensure that (NMU) policies and procedures are followed e.g. staff appointments, procurement, contracting service providers, awarding and/or receipt of funding. Ensure compliance with funders’ reporting requirements, project/s deliverables, partnership agreements. Evaluate the efficiency of business procedures and overall performance according to organizational objectives and apply improvements. Oversee financial processes and projects to promote financial sustainability. Work with NMU Innovation Office to manage the IP and commercialization activities of SAIMI. Oversee the development, implementation, and management of the SAIMI brand strategy and corporate identity i.e. website, newsletter, social media, media coverage, marketing materials, presentations, advertising etc. Risk and Compliance Ensure compliance with SAIMI’s contractual obligations. Maintain and comply with SAIMI governance framework and policies. Ensure that the institute runs with legality and conformity to established regulations and policies. Provide the necessary support and resources to ensure the execution of the Risk Management Plan. Assign risks to owners. Track progress of the risk management efforts by reviewing the Risk Register and/or risk management reports. Monitor and manage the compliance framework and associated risks. Provide the necessary support to ensure that the SAIMI team and key stakeholders commit to the risk management efforts. Monitor the efforts to address risks and provide leadership to focus resources on resolving open unplanned risk events. Provide guidance on escalated risk events and assist in their resolution. Establish mitigation approaches for identified high severity risks. Stakeholder Engagement Manage the development of any new or additional partnerships, alliances, and network with key stakeholders. Support in developing and managing the stakeholder engagement plan. Ensure that linkages and synergies with other SAIMI programs and projects are exploited for increased impact. Contribute internally to strategic reviews and development of SAIMI’s programs in general to ensure alignment. REQUIREMENTS • Relevant M+4 qualification (e.g. BTech, BCom, Honours degree). Maritime related qualification and experience will be an advantage. • 6 to 10 years extensive operations management experience including financial and budget responsibilities. • Experience in identifying and attracting funding opportunities. • Management of IP, including contract negotiation. • Understanding of the maritime and education sector, and its development agenda (e.g. Operation Phakisa, AIMS 2050, etc.) will be beneficial.
