Your opportunity: Reporting to the MQS, Project Development, and working with other UPDC departments (University Planning - UP and Project Management - PM), the Quantity Surveyor responsibilities include UPDC’s internal review of cost estimates produced by external parties for all active projects within the UPDC group. Project values will generally range from $1 million to $250 million, with some projects well exceeding this range. Project types will generally be institutional (academic/research), student residential and mixed-use, but may also include utility infrastructure, landscape and other types. At any given time, UPDC may be managing approximately 50 projects at various stages of development, documentation or execution. As the Quantity Surveyor, you will play a crucial role in the construction process by managing costs relating to building projects across the University. The QS possesses knowledge of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) field and will bring their professional and technical knowledge to bear on their assigned duties. The QS will review, analyze and assess the cost information made available. In this important and foundational role, the QS is expected to think critically, organize, plan, problem-solve and execute their duties with an independence that will increase over time. The QS will provide support to the MQS by undertaking special assigned tasks that will support broader University-wide and UPDC activities or initiatives. The QS will extract critical data points to input into a tailor-made cost database that they will control and manage. Your responsibilities will include: Provide the full range of quantity surveying duties through to completion for all assigned projects Developing and maintaining a dashboard for quick access to key performance cost indicators Advising on cost, feasibility and impact of different implementation solutions Collaborating on the cost of maintenance work and purchase orders Reviewing and approving contemplated change notices, change orders, and recommending options Planning and estimating financial resources required for programs and/or projects Essential Qualifications: Minimum advanced diploma from an accredited program recognized by the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (CIQS) and/or Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Minimum 6-7 years experience as a Quantity Surveyor and/or Cost Manager or in a similar position. Previous experience working on major projects within post secondary institutions. Strong commercial experience in post-contract and change control management. Previous experience on design and build projects. Strong knowledge of pricing, building regulations, and construction methods. Excellent negotiation skills and ability to build strong working relationships. Advanced interpersonal skills, an ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders. Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office 365. Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively.
