JOB SPECIFICATION Reporting directly to the CFO, the Group Financial Controller will ensure high quality financial reporting and systems throughout all aspects of the Group’s finance operations, including: the development, continuous improvement and monitoring of an effective financial control environment. Mukuru is looking for a leader who will galvanise a culture of empowerment, accountability and proactiveness. Responsibilities Manage all aspects of accounting, financial&statutory reporting, tax, financial systems and controls Responsible for the accurate consolidation and delivery of the group monthly financial results, ensuring timely and high-quality analysis and commentary of monthly P&L variances, balance sheet and cash flow Act as an advisor to the CFO and the wider business on all technical accounting matters including the application of new financial reporting standards and in relation to the launch of new products and services Driving the continuous improvement and streamlining (through automation where possible) of all finance systems, processes, and controls – especially month-end&year-end close process, treasury, balance sheet and partner reconciliations Management of a range of key external relationships including auditors, banking partners, debt providers and tax advisors Responsibility for all aspects of the Group’s tax affairs including tax compliance across its multiple jurisdictions, the evolution and implementation of the Group’s transfer pricing policy, and ensuring all tax issues are fully considered in relation to the launch of new products and territories Developing, leading and motivating a team of 35 people including 4 initial reports and deputising for the CFO when unavailable. Assist the CFO in preparing for board and committee meetings including preparation of board papers. CANDIDATE SPECIFICATION The successful candidate must have Group-level experience, working within a PE-backed or listed multi-product&multi-territory business. They will be able to demonstrate exceptional technical&operational finance capabilities across tax, treasury, technical accounting, finance operations, financial reporting and audit, systems&controls. It will be critical that the candidate has a demonstrable ability to drive transformational (and continuous) improvements across all aspects of the core finance function. Exceptional educational credentials (Qualified Chartered Accountant [SA or equivalent], MBA is an advantage), combined with outstanding best practice operational capabilities. Pedigree from a strong corporate training background with Big 4 (or another leading audit firm) and is able to combine this with an entrepreneurial mind-set Proven leader with a minimum of 12-15 years’ professional experience in the Finance function and at least three years in a Group Financial Controller or similar scope role – with demonstrable experience of adding value to tax and treasury operations Must have strong previous experience working in South Africa, within businesses with operations across the wider African continent. The ideal candidate should have previous experience working for a sizeable Private Equity backed company or multinational corporation. Experience of Financial Services is strongly preferred, but candidates with multi-site/jurisdiction experience in Retail, Consumer Services, Telecommunications and Technology in general, will also be considered. Highly developed technical accounting skills with strong attention to detail. Demonstrable expertise in managing and developing a team through mentoring, training, and communication. Personal Characteristics Open, transparent, and adaptable with previous mixed experience of blue-chip and high growth entrepreneurial organisations with the ability to implement best practice, drive change and thrive within less structured and fast-changing environments. Exceptional leader: high energy, results oriented, and knows how to influence people in a constructive manner, being capable of building and developing a high performing team. Shares a passion for Mukuru’s purpose and enjoys working in a fast-paced, informal but highly ambitious company. Hands-on self-starter, who knows what to do without being told, with a no-nonsense ‘get it done attitude’, quickly diagnosing issues, proposing and executing solutions in a short timeframe. Deep understanding of the African context, but at the same time, this must be a someone with a global mindset. Ability to work under pressure, commercial acumen, and capable of linking the role to shareholder value creation / profitability.
