Second Engineer Officer

Position Purpose To represent the fleet department in overall responsibility and accountability whilst operating in port limits for all aspects of the maintenance and operating of propulsion engines, other engines, deck machinery, refrigeration and sanitary equipment, aboard the vessel by coordinating and directing subordinates whilst complying with statutory laws, company policies and safety regulations, thereby ensuring maximum dredger availability Plan, compile and control annual lay-up maintenance to ensure that expenditure remains within the parameters set by the fleet department Training and development of cadet engineers and ongoing training of certificated engineers to enhance marine engineering skills and practices Liaise with and control external contractors to ensure that the maintenance and repairs are carried out within set time frames and conform to speculations Liaise with maintenance manager to ensure that critical and other spares available timely in order to optimise utilisation and production of the vessel Ensure international and local maritime laws and practices are conformed to thereby ensuring the safety and wellbeing of vessel and crew Control the ordering of and optimal consumption of fuel and lubricating oils thereby optimising the utilisation of the vessel and minimise expenditure Plan and control preventative maintenance systems to ensure problem-free running of all machinery thereby minimising downtime Practice loss control by regular inspections of machinery spaces to determine unsafe acts and correcting where necessary Plan and organise the preparation of the vessel to proceed to sea ensuring that all safety measures regarding seaworthiness are intact Qualifications and Experience Qualifications&Experience: Certificate of Competency as a Second Engineer Officer endorsed Chief Engineer (Port Operations) or Second Engineer endorsed Competencies Required: Integrity, Tolerance of ambiguity, Change oriented, Appreciation of diversity, Attention to detail, Outputs and results driven, Team builder/player, Passion for Marine Knowledge required: Risk&occupational safety, Quality management systems, Statutory/regulatory bodies, Environmental management principles, Project Management NOSA, ISO, OHS Act, Marine Operations/Services, Merchant Shipping Act, SAMSA port marine operations related legislation Skills Required: Leadership, Decision making, Communication, Building relationship, Managing subordinate, Ability to solve practical technical problems, Procedures and work instructions (SHE integrated Management System, Quality Management System), Knowledge of life-saving equipment/appliances, Safety techniques/equipment, Record-keeping, Emergency and evacuation procedures, Marine plant, machinery and equipment, Watch-keeping procedures, Marine environment, Housekeeping Equity Statement Preference will be given to suitably qualified Applicants who are members of the designated groups in line with the Employment Equity Plan and Targets of the Organisation/Operating Division. #J-18808-Ljbffr
